As a child, he was called Rust, for his rust-colored hair. Sometime after his soul name quest, he was hunting a young buck in the woods with his wolf-bond Thorn. Rust didn’t quite hit the mark on the buck, who went wild. Thorn tried to subdue the buck but ended up being killed. Rust abandoned his hunt to bury his wolf friend, making one of Thorn’s canines into a necklace. That’s why he named himself Buckthorn.
